Summer in The Bronx is going swimmingly.
A group of Fordham Manor residents came up with a do-it-yourself plan to keep cool last weekend when they installed giant portable swimming pool on a street corner and filled it with water from a fire hydrant for kids to play in.
A neighborhood resident who gave his name as Mike I. said that on Sunday, as temperatures in the Big Apple climbed into the high-80s, he and about 10 other people on a whim chipped in to buy the $120 blue pool from a nearby pawn shop.
“It was something random we did for the kids,” Mike said. “We all have children and cousins and nephews in the neighborhood and wanted to do something nice.”
The pool was put up at around 1 p.m. at the corner of Grand Concourse and Miriam Street in Fordham Manor.
As children played in the roughly 4-foot-deep pool, throngs of adults hung around, grilling burgers, hot dogs, chicken, and shrimp skewers on the sidewalk.
Word about the street corner pool quickly spread, according to Mike, who noted that at one point there were as many as 40 kids there.
“All the kids were helping set up, everyone was working together. It was dope. Hopefully we can do it again, Mike said.
He added, that locals had pools on the sidewalk there before, but only the “little kiddie ones.”
“Never anything this big,” Mike said. “This was next level.”
The “next level” fun lasted into the night, according to a video posted on Instagram Monday by 18-year-old Veyonce Deleon. More than a dozen locals can be seen surrounding the water-filled pool as a youngster swims around.
A cascade of water is also seen spilling out of a fire hydrant and onto the street near the pool, the aerial footage shows.
“Sometimes I love the Bronx. POOL PARTYY,” Deleon captioned the video, which has garnered more than 12,800 views as of Tuesday afternoon.
Deleon told The Post that she thought it was “so funny.”
“I think it’s a way for the community and my neighborhood to come together,” she said.
Some commenters got a kick out of the innovative street pool party.
“The Sidewalks in the BX are legendary…I think i seen it all now,” @dannybedford_ commented.
The pool party went until 10 p.m. when cops on patrol told the group it’s time to shut it down.
“Everyone was respectful when it was time to go. The cops were very gentlemanly. They asked us to pack it up and, boom, we packed it up,” said Mike.
NYPD spokeswoman Sophia Mason told The Post Tuesday that at around 9:30 p.m. Sunday the commanding officer of the 52nd Precinct saw the fire hydrant being used to fill up the pool and an adult on scene “was advised that the location of the pool was unsafe and impeded pedestrian traffic and that he would have to drain the water.”
The FDNY was called to turn off the hydrant and the man drained the water and folded up the pool, Mason said, adding that no summonses were issued and no 911 calls were made in regard to the incident.
According to the city code, “sidewalk areas must be kept free from any obstruction that could impede pedestrian traffic.”
However, locals said that they’re hoping to set the pool up every weekend for the rest of the summer.
“We just wanted to do something cool for the kids, give them a chance to cool down and have a good time,” said Edwin Ramos, 32, one of the people who helped set up the pool.
“We are going to try and have that pool out every weekend as long as it doesn’t rain,” he said.
