A man carrying a mattress backed into an elevator shaft in The Bronx, and fell to his death, MyFoxNY reported Tuesday.

The victim’s wife told police she and her husband were moving into the building at 1749 Grand Concourse on Monday night when the 34-year-old took a deadly fall.

Police say the elevator door opened and the man took a step in without looking. There was no elevator.

He was rushed to the Saint Barnabas Hospital where he was pronounced dead early Tuesday morning.

A police investigation was underway.
