The Brooklyn Democratic Party is planning to back Carl Heastie of the Bronx to become the next Assembly speaker to replace disgraced Sheldon Silver, sources said.

Support from the state’s largest Democratic county organization and 20-member Assembly delegation puts Heastie within striking distance of securing the votes necessary to become the first African-American speaker.

Heastie is on good terms with Brooklyn Democratic Party chairman Frank Seddio, a former state assemblyman.

Heastie, currently the Bronx Democratic Party chairman, has already won the backing of Harlem Assemblyman and Manhattan Democratic leader Keith Wright.

Queens Democrats huddled earlier Thursday to discuss the speaker’s race, but Congressman Joe Crowley, the Queens Democratic Party chairman, emerged from the session non-commital.

“We met today just to have a discussion of the situation and see if we come to some consensus in terms of who they’ll support,” he said of the Queens delegation. “It was a private conversation between the delegation.”

Queens Assemblywoman Cathy Nolan is a candidate for speaker. But insiders expect the Queens delegation to eventually back Heastie.

Silver is being forced out as speaker after getting busted on federal corruption charges.
