Brooklyn’s municipal jail officially shuttered this week, city officials said.
The Department of Corrections announced Thursday that it had wrapped up relocating the Brooklyn Detention Complex’s staff and 360 inmates to other facilities, a process that began in mid-November.
The “House of D” is set to be demolished and replaced by a larger jail by the time Rikers Island closes in 2026.
“Thanks to exceptional work by our staff, everyone has been safely moved out of the Brooklyn Detention Complex,” Corrections Commissioner Cynthia Brann said in a statement.
“The new facility that will stand here will be built to reflect this city’s commitment to a smaller, safer, and fairer correctional system,” Brann said.
Most detainees were relocated to the Manhattan Detention Complex and the Bronx’s Vernon C. Bain Center, although around 20 inmates were sent to Rikers, City Hall confirmed.
The House of D’s 24-hour bail window will remain open for the time being, according to the Brooklyn Paper.
The 11-story jail houses 759 people. Its post-Rikers successor will fit 825.
