An 11-year-old autistic boy left home alone was tragically killed in a two-alarm, Brooklyn high rise fire that he started, the FDNY said today.
Tavon Turpin’s grandmother had briefly stepped out to go to the store, said a neighbor who lives two floors below their 15th floor Ocean Towers apartment on West 24th Street in Coney Island.
The neighbor said the grandmother, Melinda McCain, 60, was treated for shock.
Firefighters found Tavon unconscious in a closet at 12:18 p.m.
The smoky blaze began in a separate closet, according to fire marshals.
Resident Anthony Artist, 44, a welder said firefighters worked feverishly for 45 minutes to try and save the boy.
“They were pumping his chest,” Artist said. “They had an oxygen tank on him and they were trying to revive him. He was covered from head to toe in black soot.”
Tavon was taken to Coney Island hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Neighbors said the boy had a history of mischief and had recently placed a cell phone in a microwave.
“It hurts. I used to put him on the school bus in the morning, everybody loved him, he was like everybody’s kid,” said Artist.
Another neighbor said, “it’s just one of those tragic situations. It’s terrible.
“He lived with his grandma since he was three. Even though he didn’t talk I saw a lot of improvement over the years,” she said.
Four years ago in the same building complex a 7-year-old boy, Tyreek Dixon, who was playing with a butane lighter, sparked a deadly blaze that killed his two young cousins and a teen uncle.
Jahgiria Sheffer, 10, and Jahnae O’Pharrow, 3, died after getting trapped in their bedroom.
The firebug’s uncle, Ricardo (Rico) Clark, 16, a star point guard on the junior varsity team at Abraham Lincoln High School, was found dead in his bedroom.
