Jewish activists are outraged over a full-sized Palestinian flag that’s been hanging in the hallway of a Brooklyn high school for months.
The banner is prominently displayed at Leaders High School in Gravesend, which shares space in the Lafayette Educational Complex.
Moshe Spern, president of United Jewish Teachers, emailed Principal Thomas Mullen on Tuesday, saying “members of the Lafayette school community” have complained about the flag since the end of last academic year.
The Palestinian flag hanging at Leaders High School seems to be a “political statement,” said Moshe Spern, president of the 250-member United Jewish Teachers group. Moshe Spern“At this point, the fact that it still remains hanging seems more like a political statement,” he said in his email, provided to The Post..
Spern did not hear back, he said.
The DOE on Saturday defended the display.
“This is one of twenty flags on display, each representing a student’s nationality. Every student and staff member who wishes to have their nationality represented as part of this collection of flags will have their request honored,” said spokeswoman Nicole Brownstein.
The Palestinian flag has hung for five months in a hallway at Leaders High School in Gravesend, which shares space in the Lafayette Educational Complex. Michael NagleShe sent photos of seven other foreign flags hanging in the school. Asked if the 20 included Israel’s flag, she did not answer.
In response, Spern said, “Although flags were sporadically displayed around the school building, the singular placement of this (Palestinian) flag was perceived as intimidating by Jewish teachers and students.”
The DOE said it had received no complaints from students, parents or staff at the school.
