A New York City trial has exposed jurors to testimony about a dismembered body, a Halloween mask discarded with the body parts and an extravagant shopping spree that began after a translator vanished.

A Russian immigrant is accused of killing the translator so he could steal her identity.

Ukrainian-born translator Irina Malezhik vanished in 2007.

Prosecutors say that shortly afterward Dmitriy Yakovlev and his wife went on a shopping spree with the translator’s credit cards. Yakovlev also is accused of killing another victim whose body parts turned up in the New Jersey woods and of stealing the identity of a missing retiree.

Yakovlev has pleaded not guilty to conspiracy and other charges. His wife has pleaded guilty to identity theft and credit card fraud.

The trial is entering its third week in federal court in Brooklyn.
