ROME, N.Y. — Authorities have charged a New York City man with fatally stabbing a 20-year-old man during a street fight in an upstate city.

Police in Rome in central New York tell local media that 26-year-old Terrance Dames of Brooklyn was charged Tuesday with second-degree murder for the slaying of Stephen LaPointe of Rome.

Police say LaPointe was walking with some friends around 3:45 a.m. Tuesday when Dames rode by on a bicycle and the two men exchanged words. Officers say a fight ensued, during which LaPointe was stabbed several times in the torso.

Authorities say LaPointe died from his injuries later that evening at Rome Memorial Hospital.

Dames was captured after a police search. He’s scheduled for arraignment Wednesday morning.

It wasn’t known if he had a lawyer.
