Looking to salvage critical medical services for local residents, Brooklyn elected officials are calling on Gov. Cuomo to provide life support to SUNY Downstate Medical Center.

The group of 29 pols — headed by Borough President Marty Markowitz — fired off a letter to the governor Thursday calling for a comprehensive “restructuring” to save the hospital and its medical school before they’re hit hard by a series of planned layoffs.

Downstate’s Long Island College Hospital in Brooklyn Heights has already laid off 150 employees. Another 400 more Downstate employees are expected be served walking papers this month while more than a 1,000 layoffs are planned for 2013, officials said.

“Downstate’s services are vital to Brooklyn residents. The population it serves — largely Medicaid recipients and under-served neighborhoods of color — absolutely cannot afford to lose Downstate’s services. Impeding Downstate’s ability to serve Brooklyn communities would have a devastating impact on the borough in many ways,” wrote the elected officials.

The governor’s office did not return calls for comment.

Downstate has 8,000 workers and is Brooklyn’s fourth largest employer.
