Chepe the raccoon is off to greener pastures.
The elusive subway raccoon living in the Nevins Street subway station has been released into Prospect Park after it was lured into a cage, a Police Department spokesman said.
The striped critter, nicknamed “Chepe” by MTA staff, walked into the trap on Sunday in what was the culmination of a dayslong quest to capture him.
Officials were at the station for seven hours on Friday alone, enticing Chepe with a cage stuffed with plantains, chicken and a bagel. Police came close to nabbing Chepe then, but the raccoon scampered out when they tried to shut him inside.
Transit workers said the raccoon was first spotted at the station in November and had dug himself in near the station’s break room. Chepe’s downtown Brooklyn digs only spread publicly after two straphangers saw him scurrying around Nevins Street Thursday.
Raccoon-related train disruptions have more than doubled this year compared to 2018.
