The city has evacuated buildings and closed off several streets in Jackson Heights after a construction project sprung a gas leak Friday morning, according to city fire officials.
The gas leak on Roosevelt Avenue between 75th and 76th streets was first reported at 10:30 a.m., officials said.
Residents and employees in the area said they were terrified when the FDNY showed up and told them to get out of the area.
“They were scared and left running when the firefighters told them to evacuate,” Marisol Rodriguez said of her co-workers at Tom Tours, which is down the block from the construction site.
“We don’t know what’s going on. They said they closed down four or five blocks.”
The No. 7 line isn’t running at all between Times Square and Flushing because of the leak.
MTA officials said they stopped the train at the request of city emergency services.
The agency is running shuttle buses between Main Street in Flushing to Queensboro Plaza.
