Bust in fatal gem heist
A Washington Heights man was charged yesterday with possession of most of the loot from last month’s fatal holdup of a Madison Avenue jewelry store.
Cops said they were still investigating whether Edmond Alma, 46, was the thug who shot R.S. Durant Jewelers clerk Henry Menahem, 71, on Jan. 28.
Alma — still considered a “person of interest” in the murder, according to police sources — was ordered held without bail for allegedly stashing 49 pieces of jewelry worth roughly $1 million at his West 180th Street home.
The suspect, whose lawyer denied he was the shooter, has a rap sheet that includes two minor arrests in the early ’80s. Alma was nabbed after calling a jewelry dealer to his home Tuesday and trying to get him to hawk nine of the hot rocks for $15,000, officials said.
The dealer tipped off cops, and officers executing a search warrant Wednesday found 14 rings, 12 sets of earrings, nine necklaces, three bracelets and two charms stolen in the heist.
Seventeen pieces were still missing.
