ALBANY — The state Senate’s new co-leader pledged yesterday to give $27,500 he received in campaign contributions from a convicted bid-rigger to storm-recovery charities.

The donations to Sen. Jeff Klein of The Bronx, head of the five-member Independent Democratic Conference, came from Cava Construction Inc., as first reported in The Riverdale Press.

Klein spokesman Eric Soufer said the money will go to Bronx charities aimed at helping Hurricane Sandy victims now that the senator is aware that company owner and president Carmine Della Cava was convicted and did time for a 1990s bid-rigging scheme before starting his current company.

Klein forged an unprecedented coalition of his band of renegade Democrats and Senate Republicans to run the Senate next year.
