Cabby boo$t in the cards
The 5 percent surcharge every cabby has to pay per credit-card transaction is on the way out, TLC Commissioner David Yassky said yesterday.
“Riders will no longer face that resistance to credit cards,” he said at a hearing on the city’s fare-hike proposal, which would also eliminate the credit-card fee.
Fare hike or not, the plan calls for cabbies to pay a $9 flat fee per shift to the garage owner to account for credit-card surcharges.
The TLC board will vote Thursday on whether to raise taxi fares an average 17 percent. Yassky supports the increase and the surcharge’s end. Gas-price hikes and other factors have cut driver earnings 24 percent since 2004, the TLC says.
