The race is on for Harlem’s state Senate seat, and incumbent Bill Perkins is feeling the heat.

Basil Smikle, a former aide to ex-President Bill Clinton and ex-Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, has raised $130,000 in his quest to topple Perkins in the Sept. 13 Democratic Party primary.

Financial heavyweights, upset with Perkins for opposing charter schools and real-estate development, are filling Smikle’s campaign coffers.

But Perkins is still considered the favorite, with public-employee unions — led by the United Federation of Teachers — rallying behind him.
