An injured man lies on his back in the street, and another of the injured is on the sidewalk.

A young woman with a blond ponytail, dressed all in black, climbs onto her fire escape from a third-story window of 121 Second Ave. and stands there, screaming for help into a cellphone.

Hundreds of passers-by have gathered within minutes, as the first sounds of sirens ring out and a brave young man from the crowd scales the fire escape and helps the woman down to safety.
