The woman accused of killing her fiancé during a kayak outing on the Hudson River this spring looked like she was in the holiday spirit during a court appearance Monday, as she smiled from ear-to-ear and wished the judge “Merry Christmas” before heading back to jail.
Angelika Graswald was brought into Orange County court for pretrial motions in her second-degree murder case. She is accused of sabotaging Vincent Viafore’s kayak while they paddled to Bannerman Island on April 19.
Wearing an orange jumpsuit and sporting a big grin alongside her lawyer, the Latvian-born 35-year-old looked as if she didn’t have a care in the world as sealed motions were filed by her team.
At one point, Judge Robert Freehill seemed to take a stab at some pointed wordplay as he chided defense and prosecution lawyers about the slowness of the proceedings thus far.
“The currents aren’t moving too swiftly in this case,” he told the courtroom.
