Mayor Bloomberg will restore money for 16,000 child-care positions that were on the chopping block, City Hall aides said yesterday.

The child-care cuts were initially slated to save the city $91 million. But the mayor’s office was able to restore the services at a cost of just $40 million by consolidating the programs provided by several different agencies.

Bloomberg is expected to present a grim budget plan for fiscal year 2012 at City Hall today, with layoffs and social-services cuts on the table — including the loss of 6,000 teachers who will either leave the system through attrition or layoffs, a source said.

He also will go on the attack, blaming Washington and Albany for the city’s budget woes, a source said.

The City Council is bracing for a fight with Bloomberg over his plan to announce 20 fire-company closures starting July 1.
