A 9-year-old boy was fatally struck a block from his Queens home by an elderly hit-and-run driver Saturday afternoon, police said.

Giovanni Ampuero was walking with his mother on 70th Street in Jackson Heights at 1:30 p.m. when he was struck by a Jeep Compass turning onto Northern Boulevard, officials said.

The driver, Juan Jimenez, 86, took off, but was stopped nearby by pedestrians and police, authorities said.

He has been charged with leaving the scene of an accident, failing to yield to a pedestrian, and failing to exercise due care.

Giovanni was declared dead at Elmhurst Hospital, police said.
