TRENTON, NJ — New Jersey plans to reduce the state public-employee work force by 1,200 jobs through layoffs and attrition early next year.

Gov. Chris Christie said the layoffs are needed to balance a $29.4 billion budget. He noted the state’s Civil Service Commission has been advised.

Public-employee unions had an agreement with ex-Gov. Jon Corzine to prevent layoffs until 2011.
