The Federal Aviation Administration has yet to install already-funded lighting systems at the city’s biggest three airports — and must do so soon to prevent catastrophe — Sen. Charles Schumer urged Sunday.

“God forbid a crash occurs on a runway with planes hurtling in two different directions hitting one another and it still isn’t installed,” Schumer (D-NY) said.

The FAA received $36 million from Congress seven years ago to install runway lights in the airports — but is dragging its feet, he said.

The automatic lighting systems are embedded in the runway, use radar and satellites, and turn red to indicate that planes shouldn’t land, Schumer noted.

An FAA spokeswoman said the agency is indeed installing the lights, with La Guardia expected to be ready for testing by the spring and Newark by the fall. JFK will go online in phases, starting this year.
