WASHINGTON — Sen. Charles Schumer threw his political weight behind state Assemblyman Hakeem Jeffries yesterday in the hard-fought Democratic primary for the open Brooklyn congressional seat.

“I know the streets of this district like the back of my hand from when I represented many of its neighborhoods and I know that Hakeem Jeffries is the man who will get the job done for all the people in Brooklyn and Queens,” said Schumer (right), who represented part of the district as a congressman.

City Councilman Charles Barron, the opponent for the seat of retiring Rep. Edolphus Towns, shrugged off the endorsement yesterday as a sign that the Democratic establishment is worried that he will win next Tuesday’s primary despite being outspent by close to 10-1.

“They’re afraid of me,” the bombastic Barron said. “The only endorsement that matters is the one that happens next Tuesday, the people’s endorsement.”

Unlike other Jeffries backers, who have endorsed him while criticizing Barron for anti-Israel sentiments and support of African dictators, Schumer never mentioned Barron’s name but called Jeffries a “true-blue friend of Israel.”

Jeffries was recently invited to an Obama New York fund-raiser and had his picture taken with the president.
