A Long Island church is lending a hand to a neighbor — helping a flood-damaged synagogue mark the High Holy Days.
When leaders of the Jewish Center of Island Park discovered extensive flood damage from a broken pipe on Sunday, the Sacred Heart Church, a block away, offered its parish hall for services.
In a hurry, volunteers and firefighters got the hall — used during the church’s Feast of San Gennaro — ready for Rosh Hashana worship, starting Sunday night, and additional services through Yom Kippur, the Day of Atonement, next Wednesday.
