The city Health Department has issued new recommendations for vaccinating against a lethal strain of bacterial meningitis.

The disease — which so far has been found only in men and contracted often through anonymous sexual encounters with other men — can be fatal if not treated immediately, officials said.

Of 22 cases reported since 2010, seven have been fatal, but the standard meningitis vaccine is effective against the strain.
