Free-standing ATMs on sidewalks will go the way of the phone booth if the City Council gets its way.

The council unanimously passed a bill yesterday to increase the fines on property owners who allow cash machines to be placed on sidewalks outside their property.

Sidewalk ATMs, prevalent in Greenwich Village and the Lower East Side, are unlawful, but the rules are difficult to enforce under current city statutes.

“They’re seedy, they’re dirtying streets, they’re blocking all types of egress on streets,” council Speaker Christine Quinn said of the ATMs.

The bill, sponsored by Councilwoman Diana Reyna (D-Brooklyn), increases the fine for property owners with the illegal ATMs to as much as $5,000 for the first day and $5,000 every five days that the ATM is not removed, beginning 30 days after the city alerts the owner.
