Two City Council members want to arm tenants with a new law that would let them sue their landlords for using Airbnb to rent out neighboring apartments as illegal hotel rooms.

Councilmembers Rory Lancman (D-Queens) and Rosie Mendez (D-Manhattan) plan to introduce their bill on Thursday.

It would add the conversion of apartments for stays shorter than 30 days — which are barred by state law to the types of tenant “harassment” that carry fines up to $5,000.

“Airbnb and illegal hotels destroy the quality of life of those around them and pose a grave threat to New York’s affordable housing supply,” Lancman said.

Airbnb spokesman Nick Papas responded, saying, “We strongly oppose large-scale illegal hotels and we know most Airbnb hosts share only the home in which they live and use the money they earn to pay the bills.”
