The City Council on Thursday passed the most restrictive prohibition in the nation against employers seeking to check the credit histories of job applicants.
Supporters of the bill, which requires Mayor Bill de Blasio’s OK, say it would combat discrimination that particularly targets low-income and minority applicants.
“It is very much a discriminatory practice,” said Council Speaker Melissa Mark-Viverito.
“Just because you’ve struggled with medical bills or student loans does not make you any less hard-working, qualified or trustworthy than anyone else.”
The bill’s narrow exemptions include law enforcement jobs and other security-sensitive posts.
