Roughly 70 percent of city students who entered high school in the 2011-2012 academic year never took a single Advanced Placement exam, according to new Independent Budget Office data.

The watchdog found that more than 50,000 kids never took one of the advanced classes that provide a jump on collegiate coursework.

The numbers were even worse for low-income kids, according to the IBO. A total of 78 percent of students in schools in poor neighborhoods never sat for an AP test, the study found.

The overall AP exam pass rate for all city kids was 54 percent.

The figures were sharply lower for kids in low-income families, who passed at a rate of 38 percent.

The IBO report also found the students in poorer districts had fewer curricular options in both art and science over that period.

Mayor de Blasio and schools Chancellor Carmen Fariña have touted hikes in AP participation in recent years.
