The city is launching 47 new dual-language pre-kindergarten programs next fall, with fresh offerings ranging from Hebrew to French Creole, officials announced Monday.

Speaking at PS 128 in Manhattan, Mayor Bill de Blasio said the number of dual-language pre-K programs will now reach 107.

Both the mayor and schools Chancellor Richard Carranza said that being multilingual will emerge as a critical asset for city kids as they prepare to compete in an increasingly international economy.

The classes are split evenly between kids who already speak the target language and students who are already English-proficient.

This year, Carranza changed the name of the program from English Language Learners to the Division of Multilingual Learners. Carranza sought the change to “honor the value of hundreds of home languages spoken by New York City public school students,” according to a City Hall press release.
