Fifty-four new city schools will open in September, including an academy of software engineering, Mayor Bloomberg said yesterday.

The schools, serving 21,000 students, will bring to 589 the number of schools the Bloomberg administration has created since 2002, the mayor said.

Bloomberg and Schools Chancellor Dennis Walcott, citing parent surveys and test scores, said new schools perform better than those they replace.
