The city will miss a federal deadline to appoint a new chair to oversee the New York City Housing Authority, as the feds granted City Hall a 45-day extension.
“We all agree that we want a little more time here,” Mayor Bill de Blasio told NY1’s “Inside City Hall” host Errol Louis Monday night.
Just last week, Hizzoner said he would not commit to naming a new NYCHA boss by the Tuesday deadline.
De Blasio conceded on Monday the search will take “several more weeks.”
The city struck a deal in January with the federal Department of Housing and Urban Development that, among other things, required the city to hire a new NYCHA head.
Under the agreement, the city replaced then-interim NYCHA Chairman Stanley Brezenoff with Kathryn Garcia.
Garcia will remain in charge of NYCHA
, according to de Blasio spokesman Eric Phillips.
On NY1, de Blasio indicated the city and the feds have worked closely in their search for a permanent NYCHA chair, interviewing “dozens of candidates.”
Hizzoner also likened the top NYCHA role as that of a mayor.
“This is a tough job – to make a fine parallel it’s like being mayor of a city of 400,000 people,” de Blasio said. “This is a big tough job. It takes a particular person to do.”
