The federal Environmental Protection Agency said yesterday it plans to begin inspecting city classrooms next month for possible PCB contamination from old lighting fixtures.

If the inspections discover PCBs — chemicals believed to cause cancer and other health woes — leaking from lighting panels that were installed prior to 1979, the EPA could demand the fixtures be replaced.

A Department of Education spokeswoman said such an order would cost the city $1 billion it doesn’t have.
