Gov. Cuomo’s gun-control law is so politically divisive that Hillary Clinton’s campaign aides thought she shouldn’t back it completely, according to new hacked e-mails posted by WikiLeaks.
“Don’t see a need to fully embrace the [Secure Ammunition and Firearms Enforcement] Act,” Clinton campaign aide Corey Ciorciari wrote in a Nov. 19, 2015, exchange.
“There are some controversial items in there. We can highlight pieces that fit within our agenda.”
“SAFE is not a safe bet,” responded Clinton research director Tony Carrk.
They were discussing what Clinton should say about Cuomo’s gun-control efforts during an upcoming dinner sponsored by the pro-gun-control Brady Center.
Cuomo and the state Legislature approved the stricter gun law shortly after the Sandy Hook school massacre in Connecticut.
But the law sparked widespread backlash among gun-rights supporters and hunters upstate.
Clinton’s staff hesitated to embrace it fully after many upstate counties passed resolutions opposing the registration of assault-style weapons.
