A Colombo crime family captain was sentenced today to 78 months in federal prison after admitting that he tried to shake down a Long Island pizza shop and club.

Michael Catapano was sentenced after he had pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit extortion and conspired to sell 50 kilograms of cocaine.

Before he was sentenced in Brooklyn federal court, Judge Brian Cogan said Catapano had a “middle management role with a major criminal organization with deep roots here in the city. … The crimes are indeed very serious.”

During a hearing prior to the sentencing, Cogan found that the mobster had attempted to tamper with a witness whom Catapano thought was a government informant.

The feds said Catapano, 44, joined the mob in 2004 and quickly rose to captain.

“I would just like to say I’m sorry for the havoc I caused to the victims and my family and to everyone else involved,” Catapano said.
