A Columbia student who carried a mattress around campus to protest the university’s lack of action against a student she says raped her graduated on Tuesday — mattress and all. Emma Sulkowicz, with the help of some friends, brought the mattress with her as she walked across the stage to receive her diploma during the ceremony, reports the Columbia Spectator.

Columbia President Lee C. Bollinger appeared to turn away as Sulkowicz crossed in front of him, without shaking her hand,

Sulkowicz said that she was done with her project. The mattress was also a part of her senior visual arts thesis.

“If some sort of museum wants to buy it, then I’m open to that,” she told the Times. “But I’m not going to just throw it away.”

Student Paul Nungesser, who also graduated Tuesday, was cleared by school officials and law enforcement of allegations by Sulkowicz that he choked, slapped and then anally raped her in August 2012.
