If budget cuts force the Fire Department to shut 20 engine companies, “every neighborhood will be impacted,” Fire Commissioner Sal Cassano conceded yesterday.

Testifying before the City Council, the commissioner insisted the FDNY would never compromise safety, and said he remained confident it could fulfill its mission even after the closures.

But he admitted it would be “difficult” to provide the “highest level of service as we have throughout our history.”

That didn’t sit well with council members.

“We’re mad, we’re mad across the city,” fumed Liz Crowley (D-Queens). “We’re scared, too.”

When Cassano said he would try to limit the impact of any cuts, Peter Vallone (D-Queens) told him bluntly, “There’s no impact on public safety that is acceptable.”
