City Comptroller Scott Stringer has told a New Jersey company to stop trying to track down workers owed $3.7 million in back pay so it can claim a 20 percent cut.
Stringer sent a “cease and desist” letter Wednesday to Metrosearch Recoveries LLC, a Passaic-based company that specializes in “unclaimed assets location.”
“Metrosearch Recoveries is nothing more than a bunch of hustlers trying to shake down hard-working New Yorkers,” Stringer said. “My office has zero tolerance for anyone who tries to cheat workers out of their wages.”
Since posting a list two weeks ago of workers underpaid on city contracts, a comptroller’s office hot line has received 590 calls.
Stringer said workers can claim what they’re owed without paying any fee.
Brian Dollard, a Metrosearch client services reps, said the firm is a “legitimate company,” but “it definitely isn’t worth the company’s time to take them to court.”
