A veteran train conductor is the first New Jersey Transit employee to die from coronavirus, the agency said Wednesday.

Joe Hansen, 62, spent more than two decades with the agency, most recently on the Raritan Valley Line.

“Everyone at NJ TRANSIT is simply devastated by this tragic and untimely loss,” NJ Transit chief Kevin Corbett said in a statement. “Our thoughts and prayers go out to his family and his many friends at NJ TRANSIT.”

On Tuesday, the agency said 87 of its 12,000 employees had tested positive for coronavirus, including 57 who operate buses or trains or clean stations, NorthJersey.com reported.

The numbers pale in comparison to New York’s MTA, which has already lost dozens of employees to COVID-19.
