Eight popular Coney Island boardwalk businesses currently fighting eviction proceedings could be back for one more season.
Landlord Zamperla USA, who runs Luna Park, is negotiating a deal to let Ruby’s Bar and Grill and the other beloved businesses return for a final summer season – provided they leave quietly in the fall, a source familiar with the talks said last night.
The only business in danger of not returning through this proposal is Shoot the Freak. Zamperla needs the popular amusement’s space for a boardwalk entrance to the “Scream Zone” amusement area it plans to open this summer.
Coney Island’s opening day is traditionally Palm Sunday, which is April 17.
The businesses’ legal challenge has held up Zamperla’s $5 million plan to create a cleaner, more sanitized boardwalk featuring a swanky sit-down restaurant and sports bar. The deal would prevent the boardwalk from being filled with shuttered storefronts this season.
Eviction letters were distributed to the businesses in November. The business owners and Zamperla are scheduled to return to court today in Brooklyn.
