A construction worker was rescued after he became lodged in a trench on the Lower East Side on Wednesday, officials said.
The worker was responding to a leaky pipe when he became trapped in a 12-foot deep hole at the Grand Street construction site around 4 p.m., sources said.
Emergency responders found the man waist deep surrounded by dirt and rocks, sources said.
As rescuers removed the surrounding soil using a vacuum truck, the worker was given the drug Ketamine to reduce his pain level, officials said.
It is the first time Ketamine was used in a field rescue, according to the Office of Medical Affairs.
The man was alert and talking throughout the hour long rescue and was ultimately lifted out of the hole on a backboard and transported to Bellevue Hospital.
He is listed in critical but stable condition, officials said.
