A 12-year-old boy in New Jersey is dead after being struck by a cop car on Sunday night, according to officials.

The youngster was walking with his brother and two friends on Route 208 South in Fair Lawn when he got hit by a Bergen County Sheriff’s officer, according to the North Jersey Record.

The cop, identified as Michael Sansevere, was taken to a local hospital but it’s unclear why. The Bergen County Prosecutor’s Office is investigating the incident.

“He’s an exceptional officer,” Sheriff Anthony Cureton told reporters of Sansevere.

The accident happened around 9 p.m. Sunday night, according to officials.

Sansevere, a 10-year veteran assigned to the K-9 unit, was on patrol at the time.

“My prayers go to him and his family,” Cureton said, “and the young man who died.”
