The driver was taken by police for questioning.Paul MartinkaThe streets and street-side businesses on West 46th Street between Broadway and Eighth Avenue, as well as part of Broadway, were emptied around 8 p.m., but the shows were allowed to go on at the two theaters on 46th Street, playing “Hamilton’’ and “On Your Feet’’ — although many shows started at least 15 minutes late.
Paul MartinkaAt about 8:30 p.m., cops gave the all-clear after finding the gas cans were empty and the wires were harmless.
The crowds were allowed to return after the driver was taken away for questioning, police said. It was not clear if he’d be charged with anything.
“I didn’t expect that kind of excitement outside the theater,’’ said Nicholle Perry, of San Francisco, who had tickets to “Hamilton’’ that she bought in August.
She was stopped only steps from the entrance. “I didn’t think it was a big deal. I thought I could walk around the block,’’ she said.
But that way was closed off also and, despite the late curtains, she arrived 20 minutes into the performance.
But it was worth the trouble, she said, adding, “The show was amazing.’’
