GALEN, N.Y. — Authorities say a central New York man has been charged with trying to set fire to a car where his estranged wife sought refuge during a domestic dispute.

The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office says 50-year-old John Thoms Jr. was arrested Tuesday after the incident at Debora Thoms’ home in Galen, between Rochester and Syracuse.

Deputies say Thoms hit his wife several times before she got into the car and locked the doors. Authorities say he then tried to set the fire using gasoline.

He was charged with attempted second-degree murder, attempted arson and criminal mischief.

John Thoms is being held in the county jail without bail. It couldn’t immediately be determined if he has a lawyer.

Police say Debora Thoms was treated for injuries suffered in the beating and released.
