Police rescued five people, including a baby boy, from a smoky kitchen fire in Rockaway Beach, Queens, after they became trapped by a jammed apartment door.
Sgt. John Patterson spotted one of the victims leaning out of a sixth-floor window in the Hammel Houses Friday evening while en route to execute a search warrant.
“Help! There’s children inside!” the 21-year-old man shouted to Patterson.
Cops from the 100th Precinct and Emergency Service Unit found that a cylinder lock had broken, pinning the steel door shut so that a terrified woman, her 19-month-old baby, her 8-year-old son and two visitors could not escape.
ESU Detective Hassan Hamdy said Detective Frank Schomaker forced the door open with a hydraulic drill.
“We got on our hands and knees. We did everything by feel; there was no visibility,” Hamdy said. “We took in a lot of smoke. We had to search the rooms. There was quite a bit of panic.”
