Port Authority police may have saved the life of a distraught man at LaGuardia Airport Saturday afternoon, by wrestling him away from a second floor ledge as he tried to jump.

The mother of the 34-year-old man flagged down officers inside the Central Terminal at 12:30 p.m. telling them her schizophrenic son was off his medication and she was worried for his safety, said Port Authority spokesman Joe Pentangelo.

A group of Port Authority cops tried to talk to the disturbed man, but he sprinted away and began to climb over a high railing.

The cops stopped him from plunging 30 feet to the main floor below, but not before he put up a fight and resisted.

“He did resist. He was spitting on responding officers. Fortunately it ended where nobody was seriously injured,” said Pentangelo.

The unhinged man was taken to Elmhurst Hospital for a psychiatric evaluation and one of the officers suffered a sprained wrist.
