Cops believe the recent shooting deaths of two next-door neighbors — found inside their Brooklyn apartments just days apart from each other — could be connected.
While their bodies were discovered on Friday and Sunday, police officials say there’s a “strong possibility” that the residents were both killed on the same day.
“There is similar forensic evidence that I observed in today’s apartment that was similar to Friday’s,” NYPD Deputy Chief Charles McEvoy explained at a press conference Sunday night, just hours after 54-year-old Basil Gray was found dead at the Bushwick Houses.
Gray lived right next door to Ana Devalle, 62, who was found dead inside her fifth-floor residence around 6:45 p.m. Friday.
She had been bound by the hands and shot in the back of the head, according to police sources.
“Based upon what I saw and what I know, it’s a strong possibility that the male that was discovered today did not die today,” McEvoy said. “There’s a strong possibility that he died on the same date and at the approximate time as his female neighbor.”
Police officials wouldn’t confirm whether Gray was also bound before his death, but they did say he was killed in the “same manner” as Devalle — meaning by gunshot.
Residents told The Post that Gray had been living alone, though he did have a girlfriend who would stop by.
“He don’t bother nobody. He don’t deal with nobody,” said one resident, who knew Gray for over 20 years. “Only his girlfriend comes here.”
One possibility that authorities were looking into was whether Gray or Devalle heard the other one being shot, and exited their apartment to investigate — prompting the killer to then shoot them, as well.
“It could all be related,” said Gray’s longtime friend.
“The last time I spoke to him was Thursday and he usually calls me everyday, but I didn’t think anything of it,” the man added. “I’m no detective, but maybe he was in the wrong place at the wrong time.”
Gray was discovered by his sister inside apartment at around 5 p.m. Sunday. There were no signs of forced entry — just like at Devalle’s place, cops said.
“The connection between two incidents, simply put at this time are unknown,” explained McEvoy. “With that said, there are similarities.”
