The City Council reduced its own operating budget by 1.5 percent yesterday — a stingy number compared to the 4 percent reductions Mayor Bloomberg recently required of most other agencies.

The $52.1 million spending plan for fiscal year 2012 — which begins July 1 — is down $793,000 from the council’s current budget.

Council Speaker Christine Quinn pointed out that the reduction is in line with the budget drop in Bloomberg’s office.

City agencies were recently ordered to reduce their 2012 spending plans by 4 percent in an attempt to close a massive budget hole.

The four uniformed agencies and the Department of Education got a break, and have to cut their budgets by only 2 percent for next year.

Quinn said council staffers will not get raises this year.

The council budget doles out funds to each member for the cost of running their offices and paying staff salaries.

Council members’ salaries — a base of $112,500 with additional bonuses for chairing committees — can be changed only through legislation.
