The city may soon have a special reward fund that will give up to $1,000 to people who help track down hit-and-run drivers.
The proposed fund, suggested by city Councilman Ydanis Rodriguez, would pay the money to anyone who gives information that leads to the arrest and conviction of a driver who leaves the scene of a crash that resulted in serious injury or death.
“We have to send the message that hit-and-runs are unacceptable and perpetrators will be caught,” said,” said Rodriguez, who heads the council’s Transportation Committee. “Using a reward fund will help solve more of these cases and let perps know that they won’t get away with murder any longer.”
The NYPD also has a Crime Stoppers fund, which offers cash rewards for information in some cases. But the NYPD rarely offers rewards for hit-and-run cases, so the city should create a steady reward strictly for that crime, said a Rodriguez staffer.
Cops are currently investigating three hit-and-run deaths that have happened since the new year.
