A Brooklyn councilman suddenly pulled out of the crowded field of potential candidates in the 2021 race to succeed term-limited Eric Adams as borough president, but declined to say why.
Councilman Rafael Espinal through a spokeswoman denied his decision had anything to with the long list of candidates mulling a run – including Mayor de Blasio’s wife First Lady Chirlane McCray.
She also said it had nothing to do with Espinal’s meager campaign war chest. He has raised $11,649 and has $4,444 on hand since announcing his candidacy in September, records show.
Instead, the spokeswoman claimed to The Post it was to “pursue another opportunity” without being specific.
Espinal released a statement saying being borough president “has always been a dream” of his but that “right now is just not the time for me.”
“I want to be clear: given my record and ability to work with all Brooklynites, I truly believe that I could have put together a strong and winning campaign,” added the term-limited councilman representing parts of North Brooklyn.
Besides McCray, others considering running for borough president include term-limited Democratic council members Robert Cornegy Jr., Antonio Reynoso, Chaim Deutsch and Mark Treyger. State Assemblywoman Jo Anne Simon is also mulling running, according to sources.
Adams is a presumptive mayoral candidate in the 2021 mayoral race to replace term-limited de Blasio and has raised more campaign cash than any of the top contenders.
