A Manhattan couple claims a self-described “handbag guru” stole their idea for a Hinduinspired line of purses and is marketing the concept as his own.
Husband-and-wife business partners Shobha Sairam and Scott Hunter Smith enlisted clutch consultant Frank La Mendola in 2013 to help them develop the luxury bags.
The couple paid for all the costs, the Manhattan civil suit says.
The three had a falling out after La Mendola recommended a designer who produced poor-quality prototypes, according to the suit.
Then, in May, Sairam was shocked to discover that La Mendola was featuring the purses on his Web site.
La Mendola did not return messages.
